"Build a free website with AI" is one of the most common pitches you'll see right now. And it's not exactly a lie — you usually can get something live for $0. But "free to start" and "free to keep" are two very different promises, and a lot of small business owners find that out the expensive way.
Here's what to actually watch for.
1. The domain name isn't really free
Most free plans give you a URL like yourbusiness.wixsite.com or yourbusiness.framer.app — not yourbusiness.com. Getting your actual domain name usually requires upgrading to a paid plan, often $15–30/month, plus the domain itself.
Ask before you build: "Can I use my own domain name on the free plan, or does that require an upgrade?"
2. Traffic and storage limits kick in right when you succeed
Free plans often cap monthly visitors, storage, or bandwidth. The frustrating part: you hit the ceiling right when the site starts working — a blog post goes semi-viral, or you run a promotion — and suddenly you're locked out or forced to upgrade mid-launch.
Ask before you build: "What happens if I go over the free plan's traffic limit? Does the site go down, or do I just get a warning?"
3. You can't export your own site
This is the big one. Many free (and even paid) AI builders don't let you download your website's code and take it elsewhere. Your site lives entirely on their platform. If you ever want to switch providers, redesign with a different tool, or hand it to a developer — you may have to start from scratch.
Ask before you build: "If I want to leave this platform in a year, can I export my site, or do I lose it?"
If the answer is no, that's not automatically a dealbreaker — but you should know you're renting, not owning.
4. "AI features" often live behind their own paywall
A lot of platforms let you start with AI generation for free, but features like AI copy rewriting, AI image generation, or AI chat support on your site are gated behind a separate subscription — sometimes stacked on top of the hosting plan.
Ask before you build: "Which specific AI features are included forever, and which ones need an add-on subscription?"
5. Branding and ads you didn't choose
Free plans commonly display the platform's branding in your footer, or worse, run ads on your site that you don't control and don't get paid for. For a business site, that reads as unfinished to a visitor.
Ask before you build: "Does the free plan show the platform's branding or ads on my pages?"
The real question to ask up front
Before you invest hours building on any free AI website tool, ask one blunt question: "What does this cost me in six months if my business actually needs this site to work hard?"
